I feel I can identify a good abstract picture when I see it, of course maybe I just have certain tastes. I have given abstract watercolor painting a try, my own efforts always include lots of sketching. I start with a simple gestural line, something that fills the page with a shape that is pleasing and continue work from there. I would say it is a skill I have, as opposed to artistry.
