All the reasons to paint trails and forest also apply to waterways- they all lead somewhere. This subject invites an impressionistic handling. The water itself contains huge contrasts that challenge a person looking at it in real life. I think these paintings are much more open to individual viewers’ perception. St. Louis Creek in eastern Grand County and Fraser River are among my favorites to paint.
